                                        What is Timbarra ?

Timbarra Plateau is an area some 25km south-east of  Tenterfield.
It harbors some 27 rare and endangered species of plants and animals, ten different forest types, is
Aboriginal  sacred land and is a near pristine catchment of the  Clarence river system.
The mountain had been proposed as National Park by Pam Allen
(N.S.W Minister for the  Environment)  for these and  other conservation values.
Despite these amazing  values Ross Mining, a gold mining company,  have been  allowed  to have their way with the plateau . They have proposed four to six open cut mines and plan to use
700 tonnes  per annum of sodium cyanide, plus many other hazardous chemicals. The cyanide leach pad will be some 25 hectares in size.
The process leaches a tiny amount of gold from ore (0.8G/tonne) and leaves arsenic in a raw form.
Also cyanide polluted tailings dams, will remain in the catchment long after the mine has finished.

We believe:

* the potential for environmental disaster far out ways the short term monetary gain
              that this company can offer.

* here on  the driest continent on Earth we should see our few fresh water ways as a much more precious resource for the people than a few ounces of gold  to line the pockets of the rich

*that the cultural and spiritual rights of people to their sacred land  should have precedent over the rights of a greedy company .

*endangered species  and their habitats should  be given  protection  from projects such as these

*that projects that cause such massive erosion and allow for the possibility of massive chemical
spills should  not take place in the catchment of major river systems such as the Clarence.
